Big Heroes, Bigger Sequels, Endless Waiting!

Telugu cinema has developed a strong appetite for sequels. Several films are now ending with cliffhangers, franchise hints and promises of another instalment. However, turning those announcements into actual films is proving to be a different challenge. From NTR’s Devara 2 to Pawan Kalyan’s OG 2, several highly anticipated sequels are still waiting for clarity on their production timelines.

Devara 2 is one of the biggest examples. Koratala Siva announced the second instalment even before the first film arrived in theatres. Although the director has reportedly completed the script, NTR’s packed schedule and Koratala’s other commitments have made the film’s immediate future uncertain. NTR is currently occupied with Prashanth Neel’s Dragon and has also committed to Trivikram’s next project. There is no clear timeline for Devara 2 yet.

Pawan Kalyan’s OG 2 is another interesting case. The sequel has strong expectations following the popularity of the first instalment, and there are plans to take it forward. However, it is not an immediate project and is expected to remain in the background for the next couple of years. The actor’s political responsibilities make an early start difficult.

Hari Hara Veera Mallu Part 2 is also yet to show concrete progress. The makers initially announced another instalment, but reports suggest that the sequel has lost momentum following the first film’s box-office performance. Meanwhile, Kingdom 2 has effectively been called off, with producer Naga Vamsi confirming that there are no plans to make the second part.

However, not every sequel announcement is facing the same fate. Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 has moved into regular production, while Salaar 2 is gearing up for its next phase, with June 2027 being reported as the proposed shooting start. Both projects have considerable expectations riding on them.

The sequel list also includes Adivi Sesh’s Goodachari 2, Rishab Shetty’s Jai Hanuman and Teja Sajja’s Zombie Reddy 2. The latter has already begun production, while Jai Hanuman is moving forward with Rishab Shetty in the lead. Mirai 2 is another project being developed, with producer TG Vishwa Prasad expressing his interest in continuing the franchise with the same team.

This shows that Tollywood is not short of franchise ideas. The real challenge is taking them forward. Star availability, changing priorities, budgets and the box-office performance of the first instalments can all influence whether a sequel becomes a reality.

For audiences, a sequel announcement creates excitement and raises expectations about the next chapter. But when years pass without substantial progress, that excitement can turn into uncertainty. Tollywood may have embraced the sequel trend, but delivering on those promises is becoming just as important as announcing them.
