Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi’s Thandel is out in theatres. The critical reviews are in, and the commercial verdict will be known in a couple of days, once the weekend is over. However, in the U.S., the day-one trend has been unexpectedly very slow.
The first Friday, which is crucial for any film in the U.S., is seeing sluggish momentum.
As of 7 PM EST on Friday Thandel has grossed around $110K, which is a low number. The rest of the day now depends solely on walk-ins, and unless they pick up significantly, day one is likely to end on a disappointing note.
The official premiere numbers will be confirmed tomorrow, but based on pre-sales reports, Thandel has grossed around $260K from premieres. Combining this with day-one gross so far, the film has reached approximately $350K.
If the current trend continues, the first weekend is projected to be around $800K, which is not an encouraging number, especially for a film featuring stars like Sai Pallavi and Naga Chaitanya, and one that aims to be a rooted, unique story with a different costly setup.
If the first weekend closes around $800K, the film’s post-weekend run is unlikely to be strong. Saturday will provide more clarity, but for now, the day-one trend is disappointing.
