Friday Release: Theater Owners Threatened

Tamil films are under constant threat of hooligans in Canada since 2016. It started with Vijay’s Theri and, has been continuing ever since. Now the latest victim is Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan.

According to reports, some religious fanatics and vandals have threatened the theater owners in Canada that if they screen Ponniyin Selvan, they will tear the screens and damage the theater’s property. They also threatened to attack the theater staff and assault them physically. Similar threats have been received in Hamilton, Kitchener, and London.

The theater owners have sought the help of the local police and the department has assured them that they are treating this threat professionally and seriously. They have assured the theater owners that they will take care of their property, audience, and staff.

We have to wait and check for further developments in this regard but it is sad to see such a sorry state of affairs in a democratic country like Canada where a law-abiding citizen can’t watch a film safely.
