Tollywood’s New Trend: Announce First, Postpone Later

Release dates are slowly losing their value in Tollywood. Big films announce dates with plenty of fanfare, but by the time the actual release arrives, the original date may already be history. Postponements are nothing new, but the frequency of these changes is becoming hard to ignore.

The Paradise is probably the clearest recent example. Nani’s film was first announced for March 26, then moved to August 21 and finally shifted to September 24. The makers have now firmly reaffirmed September 24, and the film is set to hit theatres on that date.

There are other examples too. Ranabaali moved from September 11 to October 16, while Aadarsha Kutumbam has also seen a change in its release plans. Prabhas’ Fauzi is another major film that was carrying a December 3 release date, only for the makers to postpone it without announcing a new date yet.

The bigger issue is not that films need extra time. That is understandable, especially with large-scale productions involving extensive shooting and post-production work. The problem starts when dates are announced even though there is still considerable uncertainty over whether the film can actually be ready.

In some cases, the audience gets the final clarity only a few weeks before the proposed release. By then, theatres, distributors and other films have already made plans around that date. When one big film moves, the entire release calendar can get reshuffled.

A release date should ideally mean that the team is confident about reaching theatres on that day. If the date is still only a target, announcing it too early may create more confusion than excitement. Tollywood may need to rethink this habit before the phrase “release date announcement” loses its meaning altogether.
