The trend of South Indian films being dubbed in Hindi has been a common practice for a long time. But a few of them reached the theatres as a big release.
The lockdown, which kept everyone inside their homes, then contributed to making everyone understand the quality of regional cinema. Sometimes, even the routine and thin storylines left an impression. Even the theatre-going audience preferred to watch them, leading to the birth of pan-India films.
In this particular category, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were on top. Prabhas entered, with other superstars slowly stepping into the same zone. Around three years ago, the Kannada language entered the competition with Yash, and its films also started creating records at the Hindi box office.
However, all of the Sandalwood titles could not grab attention. Let’s check the ones that emerged as winners.
Actors with beards were becoming a common choice among the public. But the aura of Rocking Star Yash as Rocky was different. People fell in love with the character’s fearless attitude, where he did not care who was standing in front of him.
The action-drama and its sequel made Yash a popular face in the Hindi market. The latter’s net collections in North India were reported to be almost Rs. 435 crores.
The combination of Indian culture and mass masala elements might have been considered risky by a lot of producers. But Rishab Shetty was confident that he could pull huge crowds with this theme.
Following the positive response to the first film, Rishab decided to present Kantara: Chapter 1 in a form that Hindi audiences won’t be able to ignore. The climax, which is considered to be better than the previous installment, has impressed everyone, contributing to strong collections of Rs. 103 crores in a week.
3) Kantara
Bhuta Kola. No one heard this word in the past. But when people watched Kantara, they realized that it is a part of India and its culture. The concept was undoubtedly close to the Kannada audiences. However, it left a similar impact on the Hindi viewers.
Rishab Shetty did not ignore the requests of the North Indian audience and brought the Hindi dubbed version, which opened to packed houses. More than the main theme, people connected with Rishab’s performance and his transformation as the film was coming to its conclusion. The box office numbers kept on increasing, with the final number touching Rs. 84 crores.
4) K.G.F.
The trailer was being shown with other films everywhere. No one knew about Yash at that time. Despite releasing with Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero, people were curious to know who this new superstar was, aiming to make a mark at the Hindi box office.
Certain shows unexpectedly had a good occupancy, and the repeat runs on television helped in the film’s popularity. It also recorded a decent number at the end, which was almost Rs. 45 crores.
5) Vikrant Rona
The glimpses were impressive. It was hinting towards an adventurous ride, creating some hype among the Hindi audience. The public decided to give it a chance, but the shows were not packed.
The response was very different. The North Indian viewers could not understand the storyline. They were also bored after a certain point, and there was no clarity behind everything that was being done by the characters. Despite the negative response, the box office collections touched the mark of Rs. 12 crores.
6) 777 Charlie
After the pandemic, people almost gave up on Bollywood. The addiction towards Hindi-dubbed films took a different turn. Rakshit Shetty’s adventure drama was one of those. The bond of a man with a dog led to a lot of excitement, specifically among animal lovers.
The emotions were intense, and people came out wiping their eyes. Unfortunately, the numbers were not perfect as per expectations in North India. But it somehow reached Rs. 7 crores in the end.
7) Kabzaa
Ever since the success of K.G.F., every filmmaker has attempted to recreate the same world in some manner, despite that they have intended to tell a different story. However, the formula has not worked for any of those projects.
Kabzaa also falls into the same category. The BGM received backlash, with a few people alleging that it was too loud. The presence of a versatile actor like Upendra could not help much. While it was a flop at the Kannada box office, the Hindi numbers were around Rs. 4 crores.
Sandalwood films have been continuously released in North India over the last few years. With limited shows and promotions, they are hardly getting recognized. But with Kantara: Chapter 1 creating records at the Hindi box office, trade experts believe that things will change.
While Yash is preparing for Toxic with a lot of hard work, let’s wait and see if the collections will be completely different compared to what we have witnessed so far.
