Toxic Final BO: Why Yash Most Unfortunate Pan India Star?

Toxic is heading towards an India finish of around Rs. 230 crores net across all versions, with the Hindi version contributing around Rs. 137 crores net. On paper, that makes it the fifth-highest grosser among films released in India this year, behind Dhurandhar 2, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Border 2 and Hanuman Ansh. But the number looks very different when the film’s enormous cost is taken into account.

Toxic is reportedly the most expensive film released in India this year, made at a cost of close to Rs. 600 crores. At that level, Rs. 230 crores net is nowhere near enough to make the film’s theatrical performance look healthy. In fact, the budget places Toxic among the three most expensive Indian films ever made. The gap between the scale of the investment and the eventual box office is what makes this result so painful.

The biggest evidence of the collapse is in the Day 1 ratio. Toxic opened with a massive Rs. 95 crore net in India, which accounts for around 41% of its entire lifetime business. That is clear evidence of how brutally the film crashed after its opening.

And that makes the result even more frustrating. The craze was absolutely real. Toxic holds opening-day records for non-sequels in Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI, Bihar and Odisha. Whatever happened after release, audiences clearly turned up in huge numbers expecting something big from Yash. The problem was that the content failed to convert that enormous opening into lifetime numbers.

The film collected around Rs. 229.99 crores net in India, with roughly Rs. 221.05 crores coming in the first week. The second week dropped to Rs. 7.85 crores, followed by just Rs. 99 lakhs in the third week and around Rs. 10 lakhs in the first five days of the fourth week. Overseas added around $4.5 million, which is again disastrous, taking the worldwide gross close to Rs. 320 crores.

The first-day records may remain for some time, although several massive non-sequel films like Ramayana and King are still to arrive this year.

Yash had the star power, scale, hype and a massive opening. Many South stars dream of creating that kind of pan-India craze but struggle even with decent content. Yash created it almost effortlessly because of the KGF goodwill. Toxic completely wasted it.

That is why Toxic will remain less a box-office failure and more a wasted opportunity. With that kind of pre-release craze, the film had the potential to become something truly monumental. Instead, it became one of the year’s biggest examples of how spectacular hype can collapse when the content fails to connect. Unfortunate.
