The release and the promotion of Kaala is a clear indication of that fact. The maker’s primary target for this particular venture is the core Tamil audience and fans in the state or outside. A major reason for this is the political theme it carries. Unlike, the previous movies of Superstar which were universal commercial entertainers that were lapped up by the Telugu audience, here for the first time, there seems to be a disconnect with the material.
In the US, Kaala is getting a massive release, a record for Rajinikanth. However, most of the screenings are for the Tamil version. The shows start from as early as 11 AM EST. The Telugu release looks to be lower than Kabali, and that should be an indication of the expectation from the dubbed movie. The earliest show is planned around 6 PM EST.
Will Superstar Rajinikanth’s charisma be able to overcome the highly localized political overtones? We have to wait and see. Pa Ranjith directs Kaala, and it is going to hit screens worldwide in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi on June 7th.
