Statistically speaking, 2023 has been by far the best-ever calendar year for Indian cinema, and here is a look into why that is the case.
2023 has recorded the highest number of Rs 500 crore grossers at the Indian box office in its history. There are as many as four 500 crore grossers in Indian cinema this year.
The said films are Pathan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar 2 with all of them clocking over Rs 500 crore gross at the Indian box office. Other biggest like Salaar, Leo, and Jailer have also done well but their domestic collections fell short of the Rs 500 crore gross mark.
This is the only time in history when a single year saw 4 such monstrous blockbusters.
The trend started in 2015 when Rajamouli and Prabhas opened the Rs 500 crores domestic gross market with Baahubali. Amir Khan’s Dangal achieved this feat in 2016, followed by the biggest blockbuster in the history of Indian cinema, Baahubali 2(2017), which was also the first and only Rs 1000 crore grosser.
Rajinikanth’s 2.0 achieved this feat in 2018. In 2022, RRR and KGF 2 has mounted this milestone. This time, in 2023, the said four films have achieved the feat.
2024 looks brighter with several Telugu pan Indian films like Pushpa 2, possibly Kalki, Devara, and Game Changer headed for release. The goal will be to beat this year’s tally of films that grossed Rs 500 crore.
