Why Is Toxic Not Coming on June 4? What’s Yash Scared Of

Yash’s much anticipated and delayed film Toxic, directed by Geetu Mohandas, has its release date once again in doubt. As reported earlier, the film’s June 4 release now looks unlikely, frustrating fans who have already been waiting through multiple delays from March 19 to June 4.

However, the real issue behind this postponement is even more shocking. According to industry sources, the major roadblock is financial, specifically the ongoing deadlock over OTT rights. The producers are reportedly quoting a massive Rs. 250 crores for digital rights, aiming to position Toxic among the biggest OTT deals in Indian cinema. However, streaming platforms are not willing to go beyond roughly Rs. 110 crores. That gap is massive and it has effectively paused the deal.

OTT platforms typically insist on preview screenings before committing to such large investments. But Yash does not want the film to be shown to anyone in advance. He believes that early exposure could reduce curiosity and weaken the theatrical experience.

But trade experts are questioning, what hell will break loose if a limited internal screening is held only for decision-makers? That is not a public leak or a wide preview. It is a controlled viewing for business purposes. How will it ruin the theatrical experience for the common audience? What sense does this make? If the film has turned out really well, then Yash may get the price he is quoting. Why is he hesitant to show the film? Has the film turned out so poorly that he is not willing to show it even to a few members in advance? What is he scared of?

From the OTT platforms’ perspective, the concern is straightforward. They are being asked to invest over Rs. 100 crores without even seeing the product. In today’s market, where several high-budget acquisitions have underperformed, that is a risk they are not willing to take blindly.

On one hand, producers want a premium valuation to recover the film’s large budget. On the other hand, OTT platforms want caution and proof before spending big.

Without closing the digital deal, Yash cannot take the risk of recovering the entire budget of Rs. 600 crores just from theatrical revenues. So, the release plan itself becomes unstable. That is why the June 4 date might be slipping.

This is not just about Toxic. It reflects a larger shift happening in the industry.

OTT platforms are no longer writing blank cheques. They are negotiating hard, reducing valuations, and linking deals to performance and content confidence.
