The Telugu states are preparing for the upcoming general elections scheduled for tomorrow. While Telangana is undergoing the Lok Sabha elections, Andhra Pradesh is conducting both assembly and Lok Sabha polling.
Meanwhile, there is a special interest developed in the voting turnout in Hyderabad this time. Historically, Hyderabad has consistently recorded the lowest voting percentage due to the lack of interest among urban voters.
During the Telangana assembly elections in 2023, Hyderabad registered the lowest voting percentage in the state, with a turnout of just 31.17%.
Tomorrow, four Lok Sabha constituencies within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) region (Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Chevella, and Malkajgiri) will undergo polling. Malkajgiri also happens to be the largest Lok Sabha constituency in the country by population.
Additionally, a by-election is being held in the cantonment assembly constituency due to the demise its MLA, Lasya Nandita.
Hyderabad has a total of 1.10 crore (1,10,57,365) registered voters, comprising 56,62,042 men, 53,92,271 women, 1148 other category voters, and 1904 service voters.
Over 10,000 polling stations have been set up across the GHMC region and 1 lakh staff members were deployed. Election commission officials have assured that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a seamless polling experience.
The outcome remains to be seen as to whether Hyderabad voters will turn out in greater numbers this time or continue the trend of disappointing voter turnout, maintaining their position at the bottom.
