Imagine standing in your seat while flying at a dizzying height of 30,000 to 40,000 feet. Well, this could soon be a reality, at least in budget airlines.
There was a time, decades ago, when travelling by air was considered a mark of sophistication. The ’60s were aptly called the jet age. With times and given the number of commuters travelling by air, soon you could hold on to a ‘standing seat’.
When flying started commercially, people dressed up for the flight and there was excitement. They sipped champagne and there was enough leg room. The food was served and there were armrests.
Cut to today, one can be thankful if they have enough leg space and the food is non-existent in regular flights. But there is one thing that one can be thankful for. At least, there is a seat.
But what’s coming next is a ‘standing seat’ or to use a more accurate word leaning perches. The model was first introduced in 2018 and the design has been developed over the years. Now, the budget airlines are eyeing the ‘seats’.
The reason is reducing margins of profit and more weight. Hence, the budget airlines are going for less weight, more passengers and maximum profit.
The seats are 50% lighter and ideal for short haul flights which means they are a good option for flights less than two hours. And they are out to hit the market by 2026. The airlines also get to win as they are low maintenance.
But one thing that these flights cannot help is turbulence. Every year, turbulence is said to cost the airlines $500 million. With climate changes, turbulence is a big problem for both the airlines and the flyers.
However, standing seats appear to be the new option for flyers, starting as soon as 2026.
