Andhra Pradesh government decided to officially drop all proceedings against retired IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao. Rao was the former additional Director General of Police (Intelligence). The decision was taken after quashing of an FIR and chargesheet by the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Secretary K Vijayanand said the case registered against Venkateswara Rao by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) under various IPC sections, was no longer valid following High Court’s ruling.
In response to a criminal petition filed by Venkateswara Rao, the High Court quashed the FIR and subsequent chargesheet filed before the special judge for SPE & ACB cases in Vijayawada.
Following the development, the AP government decided not to pursue the Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court. It also formally issued directives to stop all legal and departmental proceedings.
The case was about allegations of irregularities in security equipment procurement tenders during Rao’s tenure. The YSRCP government had suspended Rao and filed a case against him.
