Unusual developments are emerging in Andhra Pradesh under the alliance arrangement. Power equations appear distorted. Despite being a junior partner, the BJP seems to be exerting influence beyond its political strength, raising concerns within the ruling alliance.
In Andhra Pradesh, the BJP is the minor partner in the alliance. The TDP leads from the front, with Janasena as a strong second force. The BJP, despite its limited ground presence, remains a distant third in the state.
Even with negligible electoral strength in Andhra Pradesh, the BJP has been attempting to assert pressure on alliance decisions. This approach has caused discomfort among its partners, who believe alliance dynamics should reflect actual political strength.
After the 2024 elections, four Rajya Sabha seats fell vacant in the state. Ideally, the TDP should have secured three seats and Janasena one. Instead, the BJP received two seats, leaving Janasena without Upper House representation.
Another four Rajya Sabha seats will fall vacant by June. Among the retiring members, three belong to the YSRCP and one represents the TDP. Based on numbers, the alliance is expected to win all four seats comfortably.
The terms of Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy, Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose and Parimal Nathwani of the YSRCP will end on June 21, 2026. The term of Sana Satish, elected on behalf of the TDP in a by election last December, will also conclude in June.
Despite this arithmetic, reports suggest the BJP is pressing for two seats again. This has triggered concern within TDP and Janasena leadership. They fear repeated concessions could weaken the alliance balance and party morale.
Several TDP leaders are aspiring for a Rajya Sabha berth. These include Galla Jayadev, Devineni Uma, Pithapuram Varma and Jawahar, along with senior leaders Varla Ramaiah, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, Kambhampati Rammohan Rao and TD Janardhan.
If Janasena secures one seat, it is likely to nominate businessman Lingamaneni Ramesh, who is close to Pawan Kalyan. There are also reports that the BJP may field national leaders, sidelining local aspirants.
If the BJP takes two seats and Janasena one, the TDP will retain only Sana Satish. If Chandrababu Naidu yields to BJP pressure again, it could be seen as an unfortunate outcome for the alliance.
