Banning Uber – Will it solve the issue?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was speaking of encouraging start-ups and budding entrepreneurs. Some states like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are speaking about hassle free approvals and other formalities to attract investments. But all those big talks suddenly fell flat with banning of Uber cabs in the National capital and then in Telangana. Yes there occurred a rape and the accused is a driver of Uber Cabs. The person is at mistake and should be punished for sure. But all this fuss about banning Uber.

Governments have been defending the ban saying Uber cabs have infringed other laws. But they have been on roads for several months across many states. Nobody really took action on them until this rape happened. What happened to the investor friendliness all of a sudden? Why is that the government is not holding talks with Uber? Is this the entire ban thing an eye wash to sideline the rape issue?

In a recent study, it is revealed that more than 95% cabs do not have the background checks of their drivers. Even if some cab operators do have such formalities, the background checks are readily available on a throwaway price which means there are some severe loopholes in the system which need to be checked. Only banning the cab service will take us no where.
