BRS @ 23: Herculean Challenges Ahead

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi) has been synonymous with Telangana for the past two decades, even becoming the state’s identity at one point. However, that is not the case anymore.

Today marks the 23rd formation anniversary of BRS. After 23 years, the party finds itself at its lowest phase ever, posing significant challenges to its president, K. Chandrashekar Rao, in restoring the party’s lost glory.

BRS played a pivotal role in the formation of Telangana, overcoming numerous obstacles in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. The sentiment for a separate state kept their spirit resilient through setbacks.

The Telangana sentiment was BRS’s trump card, representing the aspirations of the people who wanted a separate state. Thus, when the dream came true, BRS’s victory became inevitable.

However, the political dynamics changed after the formation of the state. In 2014, KCR became the first Chief Minister of Telangana. During the first term, things were smooth for both the party and the people were also satisfied with its governance. Hence, it reclaimed the power once again in 2018.

However, the tide turned in the 2023 Assembly Elections. BRS faced anti-incumbency, particularly in South Telangana, leading to their defeat to Congress.

The 2023 defeat marked the beginning of BRS’s downfall. The Congress government started digging various scams and alleged them to be done by BRS. The Kaleshwaram Project scam, the phone-tapping scandal, and the Delhi Liquor Case… BRS was attacked by all these cases all of a sudden.

On top of that, many prominent leaders started leaving the party, including sitting MLAs Danam Nagender, Kadiyam Srihari, GHMC Mayor Vijayalakshmi, MPs Ranjith Reddy, Venkatesh Netha, BB Patil and many more.

Challenges persisted during the ticket allocation for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, with many leaders refusing to contest, anticipating that the major battle would be between BJP and Congress.

In Warangal, BRS gave the MP ticket to Kadiyam Srihari’s daughter Kavya. Even after getting the ticket, Kavya decided to leave BRS and join Congress.

Congress and the BJP are relentless in diminishing BRS’s influence in the state. On the other side, BRS has been using Telangana sentiment once again but that isn’t working anymore.

KCR faces herculean challenges in reviving the party. The first step of it would be BRS winning substantial seats in the MP elections.

The success in the Lok Saha elections would help KCR rebuild the party and bring back its glory once again. Otherwise, he would face even more challenges in the future.
