Center Bans 87 Illegal Loan Apps

The Central government has blocked 87 illegal loan apps found to be cheating users through unauthorised lending practices. The action follows growing concerns about fraud and misuse of personal data by unregulated digital platforms offering quick loans.

Officials acted after receiving multiple complaints linked to cyber fraud, harassment, and extremely high interest charges. Authorities are now tightening oversight of digital lending services and tracking platforms that operate outside legal and regulatory frameworks.

The move came after a detailed review by the RBI and the IT ministry. Their investigation revealed serious violations by several apps, prompting a nationwide push to clean up unsafe online lending operations and protect vulnerable users.

Using powers under Section 69A, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology blocked access to the apps after due process. The law allows the government to remove online content that threatens public interest, national security, or user safety.

Agencies continue audits and inspections of firms connected with illegal online activities. Authorities are also examining shell companies that support such operations behind the scenes, ensuring enforcement does not stop at surface-level actions.

The crackdown focuses on preventing harassment, financial exploitation, and identity misuse. Only RBI-licensed banks or NBFC-linked platforms offer safe lending. Checking reviews and avoiding poorly rated apps remains one of the strongest protections against fraud.
