Krishna Reaches Kuppam: Naidu’s Engineering Triumph

Krishna waters finally reach drought-hit Kuppam after travelling nearly 700 kilometres. It is a moment of hope for thousands of farmers who have waited decades for reliable water. The emotional scenes of people welcoming the water reflect the importance of this achievement in a region long troubled by drought.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu‘s determination to bring water to his home constituency has put the spotlight on the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) project. Taking water to Kuppam, situated nearly 800 metres above sea level, was a formidable engineering challenge. The project uses lift irrigation facilities and a network of canals to move Krishna waters across difficult terrain. Three major pumping stations help overcome elevation differences before the water flows through the Kuppam branch canal, which stretches approximately 131 kilometres.

The impact goes beyond the spectacle of water flowing through canals. The project aims to replenish more than 400 minor irrigation tanks, support irrigation across 6,300 acres and provide drinking water to around 4.02 lakh people. Improved groundwater levels could further benefit farmers growing vegetables and fruit crops.

For Chandrababu Naidu, this is both a development milestone and a political statement. It reinforces his emphasis on infrastructure-led development and his determination to address Rayalaseema’s chronic water scarcity.

The real test now is consistent water supply, effective maintenance and the delivery of promised benefits to every targeted village. If these gains are sustained, Krishna’s arrival in Kuppam will be remembered not merely as an engineering achievement, but as a turning point for a drought-hit region.
