Except for Vizag, No Elections This Year?

Elections to the municipal corporations of Kakinada, Guntur, Kurnool, Ongole and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh seem to be postponed. The elections which were to be held earlier this year, were postponed due to various reasons, including court cases. Only Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) will be held in September-October.

Even as the government had decided to hold the elections to these civic bodies along with the GVMC elections, it could not complete the revision of the voters’ lists and survey of BC voters. Indications are that the elections will be held early next year. The government had extended the terms of the special officers of these corporations till December 31st.

If all these elections are held together, they were likely to be as Mini Election is the entire state since they are spread out across the length and breadth of the state. Once the voters’ lists are revised and municipal wards reserved, the government will approach the AP State Election Commission to hold the polls.
