In a move that is welcomed by the world, France just passed a legislation that bans the wastage of unused and leftover foods. The measure has been highly appreciated and pressure is being put on the rest of Europe to follow suit.

Earlier, big supermarket companies used to douse the leftover food with water or bleach to render it inedible and deter foragers. The legislation instructs stores bigger than 400 sq m to refrain from destroying products that are approaching their best-before date. Instead, the companies can sign donations deals so that unspoiled food can be used by charities.

Moreover, to enforce the law, any companies found breaking it would be fined upto 75000 euros. This will likely lead to an increase in the quality and diversity of food charities get and distribute.
