There was earlier discussion about turning GHMC into India’s largest municipal corporation. Now, rumours suggest GHMC may be split into three corporations for administrative convenience. The suspense around these developments is expected to end on February 11.
GHMC currently covers 2053 sq km and is organised into 12 zones, 60 circles and 300 wards. For some time, speculation has been growing about dividing GHMC into three corporations to improve governance and administration.
Officials indicate that mapping exercises have already been completed for the proposed division. The tenure of the GHMC governing body ends on February 10. To avoid legal and technical complications, the government is likely to consider division after the term concludes.
Under Telangana core urban region (TCUR), seven corporations and 20 municipalities were merged into mega GHMC on December 3, 2025. The government is now planning to divide GHMC into three corporations to manage the 1.34 crore population.
As part of this process, boundaries of zones, circles and wards have been revised. The number of divisions has increased from 150 to 248. High density merged municipalities have been reorganised into 52 divisions.
The core area, Shamshabad and old city covering six zones may continue under GHMC. This region is estimated to have a population of about 68 lakh. Cyberabad corporation in the west and Malkajgiri corporation in the east are likely to be formed.
Cyberabad is expected to cover three zones with around 35 lakh population. Malkajgiri corporation may also include three zones with nearly 31 lakh population. Discussions are also ongoing about naming the Secunderabad corporation.
Officials say clarity on these proposals is expected on February 11. A formal announcement may come on February 10, which is the final day of the GHMC governing body’s tenure.
From February 11, GHMC is expected to be administered by special officers for the first time in ten years. Reports suggest Karnan may be appointed for GHMC, Srujana for Cyberabad and Vinaykrishna Reddy for Malkajgiri.
These special officers are likely to continue until the next GHMC elections. Political analysts say the government may decide on GHMC elections based on the results of the upcoming municipal elections.
