GHMC faces Rs 39.74 crore ad dues
Hyderabad is covered in advertisements, but GHMC is struggling to collect the money from them. Outdoor advertising agencies reportedly owe the civic body a staggering RS 39.74 crore.
That is not a minor collection gap. It is a serious revenue problem for a corporation that is constantly looking for ways to improve its finances.
The irony is difficult to ignore. Billboards and hoardings are among the most visible commercial activities in Hyderabad. They occupy prime locations, attract thousands of eyeballs every day and generate business for the agencies behind them. Yet a huge amount reportedly due to GHMC has been allowed to accumulate.
This raises a basic question: why was GHMC unable to recover these dues much earlier?
The issue is bigger than naming a few defaulters. It points to the effectiveness of the corporation’s monitoring and enforcement system. If advertising permissions and related payments are being tracked properly, arrears of this scale should not be allowed to pile up.
GHMC is now pushing harder on revenue recovery, and the outdoor advertising sector should be an obvious target. The money is not buried somewhere outside the city. It is linked to businesses operating in plain sight.
The real test for GHMC is simple: can it recover the RS 39.74 crore, or will this become another pending-revenue figure on paper?
