Hyd Record: 3,173 Drunk & Drive Cases on New YR

The government extended timings for pubs, bars, and wine shops to serve liquor up to 1 AM on December 31 and January 1, 2023. But at the same time, police resorted to ‘drink and drive’ checks at every nook and corner of the city on New Year’s eve. Even after knowing that, tipplers come out with their vehicles after being merrily drunk.

A total of 3,173 drunk and drive cases were registered under the three commissionerates, the police said. 1,413 cases were registered in Hyderabad Commissionerate, 1,314 in Cyberabad Commissionerate, and 446 in Rachakonda Commissionerate. Police conducted inspections with around 275 teams under the purview of these commissionerates.

Comparatively, last year 3,146 Drunk And Drive cases were booked on New Year’s Eve. This year cases have seen a marginal increase.

According to the reports, 6,242 commuters were caught driving without a helmet, 609 of them were caught riding without a license, 513 were fined for triple-riding, and 2,381 were caught driving on the wrong side of the road. Additionally, 479 vehicles were fined for illegal parking.

Most of the drunk driving cases were reported in Madhapur, Kukatpally, Gachibowli, Miyapur, and KPHB areas.
