The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always drawn massive crowds to stadiums, especially for top-tier matches and nail-biting deciders. The electrifying atmosphere during the season feels nothing short of a festival.
However, this could change soon. The IPL is now clubbed with luxury items like casinos and betting, after the Indian government raised the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to 40%.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the new GST rate during the 56th GST Council meeting. The hike will take effect from 22nd September 2025, the first day of Navaratris.
The government’s aim is to simplify tax slabs and increase revenue. But financial experts warn this move could reduce match attendance by 15–20% due to higher ticket prices.
Fans and critics argue that the decision unfairly targets cricket lovers instead of the tax-exempt BCCI. Meanwhile, some support the hike, saying it brings fiscal balance to commercial sports.
Under the new rule, watching IPL live will become more expensive. A Rs 500 ticket will now cost Rs 700, while a Rs 2000 ticket will shoot up to Rs 2800.
Audiences must now pay not only ticket costs but also stadium fees and additional charges. For many, the joy of watching cricket live may now become a costly affair.
