MNM chief and actor Kamal Haasan has been sworn as the Rajya Sabha member. Along with him, five others from Tamil Nadu were sworn in to the Upper House of the Parliament.
They were elected unanimously in June, 2024, by the DMK party. As for Kamal Haasan, he founded his party MNM in 2018. Later, prior to the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu in 2021, he extended his support to DMK, that was part of the I.N.D.I.A bloc.
Incidentally, DMK won the elections. Right now, DMK has 134 MLAs in the Assembly. Due to this, it got all the 4 Rajya Sabha seats in its kitty.
As per the poll alliance, DMK had promised a Rajya Sabha seat for MNM. Given this backdrop, Kamal Haasan has been unanimously elected to the Rajya Sabha.
It marks the formal entry of the actor into active politics as his party could not secure a seat during Assembly elections. Kamal Haasan joins the list of actors like Jaya Bachchan who are members of Rajya Sabha.
