Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan’s brother Naga Babu has made an important political announcement. He has stated that he will not contest elections in the future and will focus only on strengthening the party organisation.
This clarification came amid speculation that Naga Babu was preparing to contest from the Srikakulam Parliament constituency in 2029. His frequent tours of Srikakulam had fuelled these rumours in recent months.
Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu currently represents Srikakulam. To avoid confusion within the alliance, Naga Babu made his position clear and ruled out any electoral ambitions.
This is not the first time Naga Babu has spoken about stepping away from electoral politics. In 2019, he contested from Narasapuram Parliament and finished a distant third behind YSR Congress and TDP candidates.
After that defeat, he announced his political retirement. However, alliance dynamics later changed, and he was considered for the Anakapalli Parliament seat in the 2024 elections.
At the last moment, the BJP insisted on the seat for CM Ramesh, forcing Naga Babu to step aside. As compensation for this sacrifice, Chandrababu Naidu later nominated him as an MLC.
It remains to be seen whether Naga Babu will stick to his current decision. He may continue to hold nominated positions such as the Council or even a Rajya Sabha seat in the future.
As long as Pawan Kalyan remains part of the ruling setup, Naga Babu is expected to retain political influence. Contesting elections has also become increasingly expensive over the years.
About a year ago, Chandrababu Naidu had announced plans to induct Naga Babu into the cabinet. However, this has not materialised so far due to caste equations and health considerations.
Naga Babu has not pressed for a cabinet berth. Pawan Kalyan has since handed over party responsibilities earlier managed by Naga Babu to Ram Talluri.
Given the circumstances, staying away from electoral contests appears to be a practical and beneficial decision for Naga Babu at this stage.
