Kakani is in judicial remand following his involvement in illegal quartz mining case. His 3-day custody ended on Sunday. The police questioned him about illegal mining of quartz at Krishnapatnam guest house in the presence of his lawyers. But Kakani feigned ignorance. Of the 7 accused in the case, 6 have been granted bail.

In the past, during YSRCP regime, Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy along with other Jana Sena and BJP leaders led many protests complaining about the illegal mining. Chandramohan Reddy maintains that Kakani’s role has been established after investigations by mines and geology department and police.

Kakani’s acts led to the loss of hundreds of crores to the state exchequer.
