Sitharaman Flags Gender Bias Over Budget Day Attire

Nirmala Sitharaman saree remarks came into focus once again during the annual Budget period. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed displeasure over repeated attention on what she wears instead of Budget content. She said such questions have become a source of pressure.

She pointed out that every year she is asked what she plans to wear on Budget day. Nirmala Sitharaman questioned whether male ministers face similar queries about their attire. She said her saree is being treated like a Budget item.

Through her saree remarks, the Finance Minister urged people to focus on the substance of the Budget. She said unnecessary discussions divert attention from key policy issues. According to her, this weakens public understanding of important financial decisions.

During the latest Budget presentation, she was seen wearing a magenta Kanchipuram saree with a gold and coffee-coloured border. The saree reflected Tamil Nadu’s cultural background. She paired it with a golden blouse and a shawl.

With Tamil Nadu Assembly elections due in the coming months, the choice of a Kanchipuram saree gained significance. Public discussion followed this appearance as well. It was in this context that Nirmala saree remarks drew wider attention.

The Finance Minister reiterated that Budget discussions should remain centred on economic priorities. She said focusing on irrelevant details leads to missing larger issues. Her comments were seen as a reminder to keep public debate grounded.
