No Respite for Telangana’s Power Woes

Power-starved Telangana may have to depend on outside purchases for the next year as well as the works on the 1080 MW Bhadradri and 4,000 MW Yadadri thermal power plants are held up by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The state will continue to register a deficit of 2000 MW in next year as well and should buy power from private producers to ensure 24×7 supply.

But then purchasing power at a higher cost from private producers and the delay in construction of thermal power plants would result in cost escalation and the additional expenditure will have to be borne by the consumers. Poor Planning before taking up Thermal Power Plants has resulted in this mess, Power Experts say.

Bhadradri power plant, a 4×270 thermal power plant at Manu-guru has been also delayed and may be commissioned by December 2017 or early 2018, provided the environmental committee gives its approval by November end. On the other side, Telangana is hoping that Wardha-Dichpalli-Maheshwaram 765 KV transmission line is likely to be completed by January next and will ensure Telangana procure electricity from Chhattisgarh.
