It’s a classic case of David vs. Goliath. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the full backing of media, system, and finance, was the clear favorite in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
On the other side was Rahul Gandhi, who faced relentless trolling from BJP supporters. Mocked as “Pappu” and deemed politically incompetent, Gandhi even lost his Amethi seat to Smriti Irani in 2019, further solidifying his underdog status compared to Modi.
But what a turnaround it has been.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has now scored a resounding victory in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli. According to the Election Commission data, Gandhi leads his nearest rival, BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh, by over 3,90,000 votes, making it the highest winning margin in Uttar Pradesh.
In comparison, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading by just over 140,000 votes against Congress’ Ajay Rai in Varanasi.
Modi’s win looks so small when compared to Rahul Gandhi’s victory.
Sonia Gandhi, who had held the Rae Bareli seat since 2004, won by a margin of 167,000 votes in 2019. She opted out of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and moved to the Rajya Sabha, paving the way for Rahul Gandhi to contest from Rae Bareli.
Rahul Gandhi has also won a seat in Kerala’s Wayanad with a thumping majority of over 360,000 votes.
