Telangana CM Revanth Reddy announced that he will make sure 2.5 TMC of Godavari waters flow in the Musi river. He promised that this would mean that Nalgonda will have all the water it needs.
It is indeed good news. Irrigation needs have to be met and it is the responsibility of the state CM to ensure the best results for his citizens.
But consider the plight of Andhra Pradesh. The state has water requirements. Chief Minister Chandrababu is working to build irrigation projects to turn the parched lands into green farms.
Traditionally, people of both states have been farmers. Both states used Krishna and Godavari waters as the rivers flow through both states.
Now, the bone of contention is the Polavaram-Nallamala link project proposed by the Chandrababu government. The state plans to use 200 TMC of surplus Godavari water without causing loss to the upstream states.
AP’s argument is that they simply want the surplus waters that are going waste by flowing into Bay of Bengal. However, Telangana has opposed the project saying they will lose out on water for their citizens. They went ahead and challenged the Polavaram-Nallamala project in the Supreme Court.
Unfortunately, from sharing of waters, the issue has acquired a political and regional colour with Telangana leaders claiming that the Andhra settlers through Chandrababu government are once again trying to dominate Telangana and its resources.
Setting emotions aside, the best option would be to settle the matter amicably sitting across the table instead of the two Telugu states making statements to please their respective vote banks.
