The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition to give a ruling to stop children below 13 years of age being exposed to social media.
The Apex Court stated that it is a policy decision and told the petitioner that a decision has to be taken in Parliament regarding the matter. There is a process to be followed, reiterated a jury consisting of justice BR Gavai, justice Augustine George Masih.
The Court however gave the permission to the petitioner to approach the right department, and dismissed the petition. If the petitioner had already approached the concerned department, then the department should settle the matter in 8 weeks, the Apex Court stated.
The petition was filed by JEP Foundation. It requested the Center to give out strong guidelines to social media users by laying out a verification process.
Along with this, it asked the Center to control social media access to children. The lawyer representing the petitioner said that huge penalties must be levied on organisations that violated the guidelines laid out to protect children.
