Sitaram Yechuri Passes Away

Veteran Indian political leader and CPI (M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, passed away this afternoon while undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi. He was 72.

Sitaram Yechury was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 due to a pneumonia-like chest infection and has been in the hospital undergoing treatment since then.

A couple of days ago, reports indicated that his health had worsened, and he was placed on ventilator support. A multidisciplinary team of doctors monitored his condition but was unable to save him.

Yechury was born on August 12, 1952, in Chennai. His hometown was Kakinada. His full name was Sitaramarao Yechury. He was the nephew of Mohan Kanda, the former Chief Secretary of united Andhra Pradesh.

Yechury joined the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974. The very next year, he became a member of the CPI party. He was also one of the prominent leaders arrested during the Emergency.

Yechury, known as a columnist, financial expert, and social activist, had been a member of CPI (M)’s Politburo since 1992. He also served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2005 to 2017.
