The Andhra Pradesh government has given a go ahead for setting up of smart street vending markets. Women self help groups and street hawkers will benefit from it.
State’s first smart street vending market was set up in Potti Sreeramulu Nellore district’s Mypadu. As it got good response, the AP government gave a green signal to set up more such markets.
The markets will be set up in 7 cities through MEPMA. Anantapur, Kurnool, Tadepalli-Mangalagiri, Ongole, Srikakulam, Vijayawada, YSR Kadapa municipal corporations will see smart street vending markets.
The beneficiaries will get loans from municipalities and banks. 200 shops will be set up in the least to help women. Incidentally, AP has laws and regulations like the AP Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood) Act, that aims to protect the rights and livelihood of street vendors. The Act also facilitates establishment of vending zones.
The smart street vending markets provide a stable location for street vendors. They also keep vendors safe from harassment and eviction.
For example, in Potti Sreeramulu Nellore district, containers were used to provide market zone for vendors.
