Southern India’s Water War: CBN’s Biggest Challenge Ahead

Chandrababu Naidu and Vijay Discuss South India Water Sharing

Water is becoming a major political and economic challenge for southern India. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu depend on shared rivers, but disagreements over water sharing and new irrigation projects continue to create tensions.

The recent meeting between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay brought the issue back into focus. Vijay sought additional Krishna water for Chennai through the Telugu Ganga Project. Naidu also pushed for the long-pending Godavari-Cauvery river-linking proposal.

For Andhra Pradesh, the challenge is to help meet Chennai’s drinking water needs without compromising its own requirements. Naidu must work with the Centre and neighbouring states to turn river linking into a practical plan. Water availability, existing allocations and farmers’ needs must be considered before making new commitments.

Telangana faces a similar challenge. The state must protect its Krishna and Godavari water interests as neighbouring states pursue new projects. It needs to closely monitor water usage and demand transparent data on allocations and reservoir levels. Political statements alone will not protect its share.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been caught in a bitter Cauvery water dispute for decades. If Andhra Pradesh and Telangana fail to resolve their differences, they too could end up fighting over water for years instead of working towards a solution.

For Naidu, the opportunity is to make river linking part of Andhra Pradesh’s long-term development strategy. For Telangana, the priority is to protect its water rights through effective planning and negotiations.

Southern states cannot afford to let water disputes drag on indefinitely. They need clear agreements and honest negotiations before today’s disagreements become tomorrow’s bigger conflicts.
