Supreme Court sets aside Triple Talaq

Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench has passed the buck to the Legislative in deciding the fate of the Triple Talaq practice. The bench has decided it as void and illegal and asked the government to come up with a legislation to ban it.

The Apex Court had barred Triple Talaq for 6months until the Parliament makes a law. It has to be seen if the BJP will dare to do that as it will irk the minorities. But then, the judgment is a significant boost to Muslim Woman’s Rights.

Triple talaq, or verbal divorce, is practiced by some in the Muslim community to instantly divorce their wives by saying talaq three times. There need not be any rationality for saying Triple Talaq and it has been practiced for 1000 years.
