US President Donald Trump recently imposed a $1,00,000 fee on H1-B visas, shocking global tech companies. In response, India’s tech giant TCS made a major announcement. Its CEO said the company will not hire new candidates for H1-B visas this year.
“We already have enough employees in the US. Out of 32,000-33,000 staff, around 11,000 are on H1-B visas. We’ve already sent 500 this year and don’t plan to send more,” the CEO said.
He added that TCS will now focus on creating local jobs in the US and gradually reduce H1-B dependency. “We’re exploring L1 visas, but they don’t meet all H1-B needs,” he explained.
TCS recently laid off 2% of its workforce. The CEO called it a difficult but necessary move and said employees received fair exit packages. The company has also invested $7 billion in building data centres.
TCS continues to top the list of H1-B employers in the US. Between 2009 and 2025, it sent 98,259 employees on H1-B visas. In 2024–25 alone, 5,505 employees joined under the same program.
