The Telangana High Court has struck down the G.O. that permitted special premieres and increased ticket rates for Akhanda 2. With premieres only a few hours away and weekend bookings already in full swing, it remains to be seen how this order will be implemented on the ground.
A similar situation unfolded during Pawan Kalyan’s OG. The High Court struck down the G.O. at the last moment, yet the premieres and price hikes continued after the production house filed an appeal. The first week passed before a final decision was made, which meant the purpose of OG’s early shows was already achieved.
The bigger question, however, is why such PILs are being filed only in the Telangana High Court. Andhra Pradesh has not seen any such issues. Telangana had earlier permitted major hikes and special premieres for Pushpa 2, after which the tragic Sandhya Theatre stampede occurred, claiming a woman’s life and injuring her son who is still recovering.
Since then, premieres and ticket hikes have turned into a political matter in Telangana. Revanth Reddy initially acted tough on the industry and even had Allu Arjun detained for questioning. Since that episode, industry leaders have moved closer to the Chief Minister and have been attending every government event to stay in his good books.
This has reportedly irritated the Opposition BRS, which is said to be quietly involved. While the party is not opposing these issues openly, rumours suggest its lawyers are filing PILs to trouble the government. The latest PIL was framed to corner the government on grounds of contempt of court.
There are also Hyderabad-based advocates who see PILs against big films as a way to gain media and social media attention. Some Telangana-based advocates allegedly hold resentment toward film personalities because they believe the industry is dominated by Andhra talent, and therefore target large productions.
With budgets rising and non-theatrical markets shrinking, producers depend heavily on opening day revenue through special premieres and hiked rates. Audiences have been complaining that these prices feel like a loot, but that is a separate debate.
For now, these PILs are only adding to the growing challenges faced by film producers and distributors.
