Telangana Getting Ready For Next Election Battle

With the parliamentary elections concluded and results pending, political parties are now shifting their focus to the upcoming local body elections. These elections, covering the Gram Panchayat, Mandal Parishad, and Zilla Parishad, are anticipated to wrap up by the end of the year.

 Telangana has 12,769 gram panchayats across 32 rural districts, along with 32 Zilla Parishads and 540 Mandal Parishads, serving a rural population of over 20 million.

The previous Gram Panchayat elections were held in January 2019, and the current term ended on February 1, leading to the appointment of special officers until new elections are conducted.

Specifically, Gram Panchayat elections are expected between July and August, while Mandal Parishad and Zilla Parishad elections are slated for October to December.

To maintain momentum from the parliamentary elections, parties are engaging in public agitation programs, strategizing to keep the political climate active until the local elections.

The BJP and BRS are already actively preparing for these elections.

On May 16th, the BRS organized protests addressing farmers’ issues, led by constituency in-charges and MLAs.

Plans include demanding a Rs.500 bonus per quintal of grain and a Rs.2 lakh loan waiver for farmers, aiming to exert pressure on the current government.

Similarly, the BJP has initiated its own agitation programs, such as meeting farmers and organizing rallies, to highlight their support for agricultural communities.

Both parties are focusing on maintaining their voter base and exploiting their opposition roles to gain maximum seats in the local bodies.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress party is crafting its strategy to counter the opposition’s efforts. They plan to launch a special Farmer Welfare Corporation to implement loan waivers and improve grain procurement processes.

By fulfilling pre-election promises, the Congress aims to strengthen its connection with the public and secure victories in the local body elections.

They are already mobilizing their resources in constituencies with current MLAs and are preparing plans for other areas.

These local elections are crucial for all political parties as they lay the foundation for broader political strategies and influence in rural Telangana.
