Tirumala Guest House Row: Karnataka’s Decision Upsetting TTD

A fresh dispute has broken out between the Karnataka government and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) over a guest house in Tirumala. Karnataka’s decision to transfer the facility to its Tourism Department has raised concerns at TTD. The main question is whether the move is in line with the original agreement under which the land was given.

How the Dispute Started:

In 2008, TTD leased 7.05 acres of land in Tirumala to the Karnataka government for 50 years. The land was meant to support facilities for pilgrims visiting Lord Venkateswara. Providing accommodation and other basic amenities to devotees was the main purpose.

Karnataka now wants its Tourism Department to manage the guest house. TTD has reportedly objected to the decision and is planning to issue a notice to the state government. If the transfer is found to violate the agreement, legal action could follow.

Karnataka may believe that handing over the facility to its Tourism Department will make management easier. But there is an important question that cannot be ignored: does the original agreement allow this change? The answer depends on the terms of the lease and any agreements made later.

Tirumala’s Sanctity Must Be Respected:

This is not the first time an issue involving Karnataka and Tirumala has drawn attention. The birthplace of Lord Hanuman has also been a subject of discussion. TTD identifies Anjanadri Hill in Tirumala as Hanuman’s birthplace, while Karnataka’s Hampi region is traditionally associated with Kishkindha from the Ramayana.

These places hold deep religious significance for devotees. The guest house dispute is a separate issue, but it adds to the sensitivities surrounding religious sites and traditions.

Karnataka and TTD should handle the matter carefully and resolve their differences through proper discussions. Devotees should not have to see religious places and facilities become the centre of repeated disputes.
