Vijay Giving A Perfect Opportunity For BJP In Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu will head into Assembly elections next year, with politics traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Power has alternated between these two parties for decades, leaving little room for other forces to gain a lasting foothold.

The BJP has been trying to establish itself in the state for a long time. However, the Dravidian parties have consistently pushed narratives around Hindus and Hindi, limiting the saffron party’s ability to expand its influence in Tamil Nadu.

For the first time, a strong third force is entering Tamil Nadu politics in the form of film star Vijay. His entry has changed the political equation and added a new layer of uncertainty ahead of the elections.

Minorities have traditionally aligned with the DMK in Tamil Nadu. Christians make up around 6.12% of the state’s population and form a key vote bank that often plays a decisive role in closely fought elections.

The direction of this vote becomes crucial as Vijay himself is Christian. This factor has triggered fresh calculations among political parties, especially the DMK, which has moved quickly to reinforce its minority support base.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin have been attending Christmas events organised by Christian groups. During one such event, Udhayanidhi stated that Christian principles align closely with DMK principles, citing equality and social justice.

In situations where parties compete to appease minorities, Hindu voters often feel sidelined. The BJP typically uses such moments to mobilise Hindu sentiment and consolidate its base.

The Karthikai Deepam Festival controversy has emerged as a potential opportunity for the BJP. The government stopped the lighting of the traditional sacred lamp at the Deepathoon pillar atop Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai, near the Sikandar Badusha Dargah.

Although the Madras High Court permitted the ritual, calling it an essential Hindu practice rooted in Tamil tradition, the DMK-led government cited law and order concerns. This led to restrictions, prohibitory orders, and appeals to the Supreme Court.

This situation offers ground for the BJP to raise the issue and rally Hindu voters. However, the party’s state leadership has struggled to capitalise on it effectively.

Whether Hindu voters in Tamil Nadu will respond remains an open question. The state’s political landscape has long been resistant to change and has proven difficult for national parties to break.

Still, this phase may present a rare opening for the BJP. It remains to be seen whether Narendra Modi and Amit Shah can turn this moment into a breakthrough in Tamil Nadu.
