WhatsApp Introduces ‘Forwarded’ Messages to Tackle Fake News

After being reprimanded by the Government of India for Fake News leading to Lynching of several persons across the country, WhatsApp has finally rolled out ‘Forwarded’ message feature. This feature is aimed at curbing fake news and will also inform the users that it is not a news sent by the actual user but is forwarded and may not be verified by the actual sender.

The Government of India has expressed its grave concerns to the Messaging Platform that the rumor-mongering may lead to lynching incidents further ahead of the Election season. Whatsapp seems to be taking the steps and it has to be seen if they will be enough.

WhatsApp, which is now being used by over 1.5 billion people in over 180 countries and has over 200 million monthly active users in India, is concerned about any issues arising with the Government of India and so also called for a $50,000 (roughly Rs. 35 lakh) reward to proposed programmes that it has dedicated to developing markets including India to tackle the problem.
