What Is the Film About?

Mahavatar Narasimha focuses on the Narasimha avatar of Lord Shri Vishnu.

The story begins with the origins of demon king Hiranyakshyapa, why he wants to be God of Gods, his hatred of Lord Shri Vishnu, and how his eventual downfall arrives via his son, Prahladh, aka Bhakta Prahlad.

Analysis

Ashwin Kumar directs Mahavatar Narasimha. It is an animation retelling of the classic Bhakta Prahlad story.

If anyone is still unclear about the movie, the voiceover at the start related to the pre-credits makes things clear – Mahavatar Narasimha is an animated movie following Hindu mythology-based stories from multiple sources. In this case, it’s the story of demon king Hiranyakshyapa and his son Prahlad.

The movie starts on an intriguing note as the origins of the demon king are well laid out. We are also introduced to the world of Gods, Demons and Sages.

Once the twin demon brothers are born, Mahavatar Narasimha follows the typical commercial villain, establishing a routine showing the extent to which the brothers go to get what they want. It appears routine despite the different making and presentation.

Still, the narrative engages as the world it created offers freshness and a different presentation of the routine. The screenplay builds to the conflict properly despite the routineness.

Once we are hooked to the villain, and his desire and want him to lose desperately, that’s half the success with narratives like these.

Hiranyakashapa’s goal to be God and defeat Lord Vishnu hits the intended emotions. It’s why when Prahlad, his son, is introduced as an antithesis to everything that he stands for, one immediately connects to the character and is invested in the proceedings.

The interval block is alright and sets things up perfectly for the devotional ride ahead.

The second half is where the real emotion lies. It’s here that the deficiencies with the animations cease to exist as we are invested in the story.

The blocks that arrive one after another, the cliff sequence, Holika Dahanam, throwing in the sea and divine revelation and then the eventual climax bring the required emotional high.

The pre-climax and climax in particular are extremely satisfying from the emotional and devotional angle. It strikes home the message it wants to convey and also leaves one satisfied with the story’s culmination.

Mahavatar Narasimha is an animated film, but it’s packed like a mass outing with emotions that would work for the youth and old, as well. The action scenes are designed to keep youth engaged whereas the emotions work for the general audience.

Overall, Mahavatar Narasimha comes with a story that many might be aware of. But, the package and the mounting effort make it stand out within the animation space. The emotions work big in the second half and leave one fully satisfied by the end. If you like devotional films and don’t know the Bhakta Prahlad story, it’s a definite watch.

Music and Other Departments?

Sam CS provides the music and the background score for the film. They are very crucial for any devotional flick. The idea here is clear to keep things modern yet rooted and he is a perfect fit for the same. The songs are okay, but the BGM is excellent and it lifts the proceedings from the start.

Mahavatar Narasimha is an animated narrative, and its technical department has a different job at hand. We have very few films made in this style in India let alone in regional films. Kichchadaiyaan was a prominent one in this space long ago. Mahavatar Narasimha is a giant leap compared to it.

The cinematography is neat, immersing us slowly into the world. The scenes, however, are filled with lots of colours and sparkles most of the time, which is a bit distracting.

The editing has a crispy feel overall, but when we look closely, there are a lot of jump cuts and blurriness. The latter is related to the VFX and could be improved.

As mentioned, the action scenes take huge inspiration from video games in a bid to appeal to the youth and are fine. The writing is decent, but in Telugu, due to the lack of lip sync, the dubbed feel can’t be shaken off.
