
In the ongoing Rajasthan assembly elections, the count of wealthy candidates has risen alongside those with tainted backgrounds. Among 1,875 candidates, a notable 651 are millionaires, marking an increase from the previous election. The average wealth of contenders this time stands at ₹3.12 crore, a notable rise from the earlier ₹2.12 crore. These findings stem from an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms and Election Watch, delving into the candidates’ affidavits.
Of the affluent candidates, BJP boasts 160, while Congress showcases 149. Surprisingly, 8 candidates report zero assets. Rafiq Mandelia, Congress’ Churu candidate, tops the list with assets worth ₹166 crore, trailed closely by BJP’s Prem Singh Bajaur from Neemkathana with ₹123 crore. Udaylal Anjana, Congress’ candidate from Nimbahera, secures the third spot.
Troublingly, 236 candidates face serious criminal charges, including 42 from BJP, 34 from Congress, and others from various parties. These statistics reflect the evolving landscape of wealth and legal issues among candidates in Rajasthan’s electoral arena.
