‘Bharat’ To Replace ‘India’ In Textbooks

The 2022 Social Science committee tasked with revising the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recommended that ‘India’ be referred to as ‘Bharat’ in all Social Science textbooks up to Class 12.

The committee, led by historian and Padma Shri awardee Prof C.I. Issac, hopes that this suggestion will be implemented in the next academic year, pending NCERT’s decision.

Additionally, the committee has proposed introducing Indian victories and post-independence history in the curriculum, reducing the emphasis on pre-independence events. They also suggested replacing ‘ancient history’ with the ‘classical period of Indian history.’
