Brutal Layoffs Continue: No Safety For Techies

It has become kind of a trend to implement mass layoffs in the tech industry worldwide. From global giants like Google, Facebook, and Amazon to Indian tech moguls like Infosys, everyone seems to be letting their employees go, some in a subtle way, others not so much.

Indian tech giant Infosys recently fired a large number of trainees, after they supposedly failed their ‘internal assessment’. These employees had just joined the company back in September 2024, after a massive 2-year delay since their campus placement.

The brutal layoffs were carried out with security placed outside, and bouncers ready inside the room. Buses were used to shield the brutality from some US teams visiting the campus that day.

An employee was left dumbfounded after she was asked to vacate the Mysuru campus out of the blue. She said, “Please let me stay the night. I will leave tomorrow. Where will I go right now?”

This year alone, a total of 7000 employees have been fired by tech companies worldwide.

Meta has fired over 3000 ‘low-performing’ employees, with Amazon firing 27000 in the last three years. Although Microsoft has no plans as of now to fire people in India, the tech dynamic can change anytime due to its volatility.

Google has been using a system of voluntary leave programs in the US to let employees go with a severance package.

With the world moving towards a much more competitive capitalistic economy, it will be interesting to see how far ahead these layoffs will go.
