In a deeply disturbing incident from Bihar’s Gaya district, a woman has been taken into custody for allegedly poisoning her husband by mixing a toxic substance in watermelon. The incident occurred in Keshapi village under Dobhi police station limits.
According to reports, 25-year-old Mantu Yadav died after consuming a watermelon allegedly laced with poison by his 22-year-old wife, Lakhiya Devi.
The two were married in 2022, but since then, Lakhiya had spent most of her time at her parental home in Bela village, under Hunterganj police station in Jharkhand. She had returned to live with her husband just a month before the incident.
Family members revealed that two days before the tragedy, the couple had a serious argument. After the fight, Mantu left home for his job as a truck helper.
On Monday, Lakhiya reportedly called him back home and brought him from Dobhi. Once inside their room, the two stayed alone for a while.
Soon after, Mantu’s family heard him screaming from inside the room. When they forced the door open, Mantu reportedly told them that he had been feeling extremely uneasy and accused Lakhiya of mixing something into the watermelon he had eaten.
Mantu collapsed shortly after and was rushed to a hospital, but he died on the way. Following the accusations and circumstances, Lakhiya has been taken into police custody for interrogation.
The case has shocked the local community, especially as it coincided with Vat Savitri Puja, a day when married women pray for the long life of their husbands.
