COVID Returns to Asia—Indian Under Threat Again?

A resurgence of Covid-19 cases has been reported across Asia, with Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand experiencing significant increases in infections, hospitalizations, and overall virus activity.

Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong, issued an alert reporting, “The virus’ activity is quite high,” stating that the respiratory samples testing positive for the virus have reached their highest level since last year.

The rise in positive test results isn’t the only problem; according to a sewage surveillance report, a reliable indicator of community spread, elevated viral loads of the virus were detected, confirming that coronavirus is circulating widely in a city of over 7 million.

In the week ending May 3, Hong Kong recorded 31 severe cases, including deaths—the highest weekly total reported in a year after the pandemic.

The Health Ministry in Singapore also released a formal COVID update after cases surged by 28% in one week and hospitalizations jumped by 30%, with the government calling on high-risk residents to stay up to date on vaccinations.

Singapore’s health ministry suggested, “There’s no evidence these strains are more severe, but they are still capable of disrupting lives and overwhelming healthcare systems.”

Similar trends are showing up in China, where hospital patients’ Covid test positives have doubled in recent weeks, according to the CDC.

Additionally, the Department of Disease Control reported that a number of outbreaks have occurred in Thailand as a result of large gatherings after the Songkran festival.

Although no new strains were detected, medical professionals believe the virus is spreading so quickly because of a weakened immune system.

India hasn’t experienced any notable rises in cases, despite the fact that they are largely increasing all over Asia.

According to the official report by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India has only 93 active cases of Covid-19, with authorities confirming no new wave of the virus has been detected so far.
