Big Drama on Influencers, Silence on Biggest Fraud?

When comedian Kunal Kamra made a joke about the current ruling government, the aftermath was extreme. After the video went public, the venue was raided by goons who damaged property and even threatened his life, all because he poked fun at those in power.

During the India’s Got Latent controversy, comedian Apoorva Mukhija received repeated rape threats, while Samay Raina faced similar harassment. These incidents show how quickly jokes in this country can be turned into national controversies. Yet when a truly serious issue arises, it is often brushed aside as if it were a joke.

Recently, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi revealed that Election Commission records exposed duplicate and fake voters in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In one Karnataka assembly seat alone, over one lakh fake voters were identified, and evidence suggested collusion between the government and the then BJP administration to secure the party’s win.

Shocking irregularities emerged, including fake names on the voter list, single people registered multiple times, voters listed under a house number “0,” and 80 registered voters tied to a single-room flat. Anyone can confirm these details by visiting the Election Commission’s official website, yet the issue has received little official attention.

Even with this matter trending online, the Election Commission has not released a detailed public statement explaining these findings. Many people feel betrayed, seeing how swift the government’s response is to jokes about sex or criticism of the ruling party, compared to its silence on such a crucial matter.

Rahul Gandhi’s statements have intensified debate over whether the government is more interested in controlling the narrative than addressing genuine accountability. For citizens, the right to vote is a pillar of democracy, and when that right is undermined, it risks leaving the entire system without public trust.
