Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival that symbolises devotion, unity, and joy. But recent incidents of idol vandalism have cast a shadow over the celebrations, sparking widespread anger and sorrow among devotees.
Social media has been flooded with disturbing videos showing idols being allegedly damaged or mishandled. Some viral posts even claim that JCBs and other machinery were used to crush Ganesh idols. While these extreme claims remain unverified, they have caused deep distress.
However, several confirmed cases have surfaced from across the country. In Bengaluru, a software engineer was arrested after he damaged a two-foot Ganesh idol in an apartment complex. CCTV footage showed him pushing the idol while intoxicated.
In Surat, two individuals were detained for tearing Ganpati posters and damaging property during a dispute linked to the festivities. Authorities also discovered several idols with broken hands and fingers at a local display area.
These incidents raise a serious concern about the growing insensitivity toward religious sentiments. Festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi are meant to bring people together, not cause division and hurt.
Even if some viral clips are false or exaggerated, the confirmed cases demand swift and strict action by law enforcement. The protection of religious symbols must be a priority.
More importantly, citizens must recognise that idols are not just materials they hold deep spiritual meaning. Respecting them is part of respecting our culture and each other.
Ganesh Chaturthi should remind us of our responsibility to uphold harmony. Acts of vandalism harm not just religious faith but also the social fabric of India.
