Economists all around the world have recently been arguing if the Taylor Swift economy is even real. Many believed that it is not and more like a bubble. Even if it is true, the whole world wants to ride on it and get something out of it. As Germany is hyping themselves up for the next leg of the Eras Tour, a city which is going to host these concerts has gone a step too far to impress all the swifties.
The city of Gelsenkirchen has decided to rename itself ahead of Taylor’s concert. The mayor announced that the city would be renamed as Swiftkirchen. If you think that this step is a bit crazy then you’re not alone. Even some Taylor Swift fans believe that the Eras Tour has become a phenomenon from which everyone wants to make profit.
Gelsenkirchen is going to host 3 concerts of Swift this July and is going to welcome a large number of tourists both local and international thanks to the tour. The city wants to make the best use of the opportunity and renaming it can be a way of promoting tourism.
However, it is important to see how the locals are going to react to it. Swift is not the Olympics. She is not Cannes either. But she has become the music industry in herself and achieved what no one ever thought. It can be argued if that is enough to name the city after her but the move is sadly motivated by money and not for music.
